Personal Statement
“I have five years’ of post-specialisation experience and have been a Consultant Radiologist for a similar period, with dual FRCR and FRANZCR accreditation. My background of working in reputed hospitals in India and Singapore has given me a real appetite for the challenges of a fast-moving environment. There’s nothing better than working with a team of professionals who know exactly what they’re doing, always support each other and treat pressure as an opportunity to excel.”
Career Highlights
“At HIS, I have the opportunity to experience both high-throughput hospital-based practices, and stand-alone imaging centres – sometimes independently but more often as part of a well-motivated and friendly team. In my experience, working collegiately and closely with clinicians and support staff produces the best service for patients.
Looking back at my career so far, I would say that working at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in Singapore, which has over 1100 acute care and hospice beds, gave me invaluable experience and taught me the real importance of close interaction with the people around me. But actually, I’m looking forward to the future and know that the relationships I’m building now will present great opportunities on the road ahead.
Working in a team is exhilarating – especially when you’re surrounded by great people.”

Personal Statement
“The career path I have taken has led me on an exciting journey across the world. My passion for radiology has given me the opportunity to engage with both the practical and academic medical communities. Early on in my career, I practiced and trained in Dublin, Ireland and from there, I worked in London. These experiences afforded me opportunities to diversify my knowledge and skillset in a variety of hospital settings.
It is always a positive to look back and remember where I come from. Like many other radiologists, I’ve been able to work in a variety of settings. HIS is an organisation that can attest to this. Many of my colleagues share a similarly long and interesting career path. The diversity within HIS is an asset – doctors from different walks of life are welcomed into the fold and this helps creates an environment in which we are encouraged to share our ideas and concerns.”
Career Highlights
“The journey I have taken has given me the opportunity to work throughout the United Kingdom in Dublin, Cambridge and London. Given the sub-specialisation and interaction with other medical specialties, radiology is truly an amazing career. Dedication allows doctors to share their insights with peers, and this transfer of knowledge allow us all to become better professionals. It is also extremely rewarding to receive commendations and be featured in publications. My experience has put me in a position that has enabled me to use my knowledge for the betterment of others.”

Personal Statement
“After finishing medical school in Pretoria, South Africa, I moved to the United Kingdom where I worked in areas including Psychiatry, ENT and General Surgery. I graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons, London and the Royal College of Radiologists in Glasgow.
I finally chose Radiology – or perhaps it chose me – because I wanted to work at the cutting edge of medical technology. And I chose HIS because the company has always been very receptive to innovation suggestions from radiologists. It’s very exciting to feel valued and heard at the start of your professional career and, in fact, working at HIS has opened the door to significant professional, educational and management opportunities.
Medicine is all about transfer of wisdom and knowledge between the experienced and inexperienced, and HIS exercises that concept through every level of its organisational culture.
Being energised by work is vital to me, but so is the freedom to enjoy life. I feel the career opportunities within HIS are endless”
Career Highlights
“Radiology provides an excellent generalist overview that our clinician colleagues definitely value; there’s certainly a high demand for our input at clinical and multidisciplinary meetings. My professional interests include teaching, paediatric and genito-urinary imaging, as well as involvement in management and teaching – as you might expect from the Director of Training. Sharing my knowledge and experience with younger colleagues is extremely rewarding. My career and organisation ensure that I am afforded this opportunity every day.”
Dr Rose Thomas hails from Benoni, South Africa, birth town of the other famous South Africans; actress Charlize Theron, Charlene, Princess of Monaco and comedian Urzila Carlson.
She attended Medical School in Pretoria, South Africa and then spread her wings to the UK to work in Psychiatry, ENT and General Surgery, where she finally saw the light. Rose’s Radiology training was undertaken at Peninsula Radiology Academy in Plymouth, Devon, UK. Rose came to Melbourne in January 2014 and has done two Body Imaging Fellowships at The Alfred and the Austin Hospitals, before taking up a Consultant Radiologist position at The Northern Hospital, Epping, Melbourne.

MBBS, FRCRDr Nadira Abid Ali
Personal Statement
“I believe that a successful career is one that continually progresses. Mine began in Pakistan with an MBBS qualification and has led me, step-by-step, to becoming a Consultant Radiologist for Healthcare Imaging. I am currently in charge of providing the full range of imaging modalities across a diversity of cases for a leading regional hospital.
Naturally the experience I gained in a number of senior international and specialist posts is invaluable, but even more important, are the opportunities I now have to develop, to teach as well as learn and to assume ever-more responsible roles. Progress step by step. Or better still, stride by stride – that’s my mantra.”
Career Highlights
“I have been fortunate enough to have held academic positions that include Assistant Professor at Dow University of Health Sciences in Pakistan and Senior Registrar at King Hamad University Hospital in Bahrain.
I’ve also been a Specialist Radiologist at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital and the Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group in Saudi Arabia.
But for me, working in a collegiate, supportive atmosphere where I’m inspired to develop new solutions is the real highlight. In order to progress, you must first place yourself in a progressive environment.”

Personal Statement
“HIS offers a lot of advantages for Radiologists to practice their sub-specialisation. Being a Breast and Women’s imaging sub-specialist, I have been able to deep dive into my interest from day one. In the large HIS network, there is never a shortage of interesting cases to keep you on your toes. With over 150 locations throughout Australia, there is always demand for your speciality.
There are lots of opportunities to work with your relevant medical or surgical specialist. This constantly keeps you updated with the latest and best treatment available in the field.
More than that, I have the privilege to work in an environment with multiple other radiology sub-specialties at my disposal. In my centre, I have abdominal, neurology, respiratory, paediatric and interventional radiology colleagues who are not only my partners in crime at work, but also some of my closest friends who I share my life with.
Patients do not just come with one sub-specialty problem and a hospital or medical centre does not have patients with just one disease. Having collegial support is extremely important, especially when starting your career, and HIS is big enough to provide this. This was one of the, if not most enticing feature that tipped me over to join HIS.”
Career Highlights
“HIS offers me the ability to pursue my interest in radiology in a supportive environment while also having a satisfying work-life balance. I have time, not only for my family, but also to indulge my passion for playing, building, modifying and collecting electric guitars.
The thing that satisfies me most is being able to use my knowledge to aid clinicians to make beneficial difference to a patient’s life.
The gratitude you receive for the impact you make is priceless!”

“Working in a collegiate atmosphere with bright young doctors and experienced and knowledgeable consultants is undoubtedly exciting. This is far from the only benefit of our work, however. I’m very pleased to be in a company that’s determined to be at the forefront of development in radiology – a field that I believe is evolving faster than any other medical discipline.
The evidence of HIS’ forward thinking is all around us; we’re constantly installing new technology or updating operating systems so that we can provide the best possible service. As a Director, I have guided the process to ensure we always offer a rapid turnaround of imaging results, in the most convenient way. This is achieved with access to images and reports via the state-of-the-art online imaging Inteleconnect/Inteleviewer system”
Career Highlights
“I’ve been very involved for a number of years in multimodality guided intervention as well as breast and emergency intervention. But the best part of being at this stage in my career is using my experience and leadership skills to guide and inspire up-and-coming radiologists.
If you’re not working with the most advanced systems and technology, you have one hand tied behind your back. I’ve been working for 35 years, and it’s now more exciting than ever.”

“I believe that continuous professional development is the key to career success; whether you’re intent on sub-specialising in a particular field in order to provide advanced levels of care, want to conduct research that will increase medical understanding of specific conditions or even move into management to enhance the systems of care offered to patients.
HIS has a policy of tangible support and encouragement for development at all levels. The company recognises the more eminent and knowledgeable its doctors become, the more valuable and comprehensive its offering and the company’s ability to serve communities across Australia. Not all companies have grasped this, and don’t operate in such a mutually beneficial way.”
Career Highlights
“My professional development stretches from being an intern in the Civil Hospital Karachi, to becoming a Consultant Radiologist within HIS. In addition to my FRANZCR, I’ve held radiological fellowships in London (FRCR), Canada, and Pakistan (FCPS) and have been extensively involved in teaching, lecturing and a number of clinical innovations.

Personal Statement
“Originally from Barbados, I grew up in Durban, South Africa where I studied at the University of Cape Town. Having failed to initially make the cut as a professional cricketer while a medical student, I finally qualified in 1998. In 1999, I returned to Durban to embark upon a career in medicine as an intern at Addington Hospital.
My career in medicine has taken me all around the world from working as a registrar in emergency medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland and acquiring fellowship in the South African College of Radiologists to training in interventional radiology at the McMaster University in Canada and finally becoming the Director of Northern Health in Australia.”
Career Highlights
“Over the course of my career, I have taken leading roles in neuroradiology, HPB and colorectal services, as well as actively participated in the women’s, paediatric and orthopaedic services. With a particular interest in emergency radiology, I believe I am well placed within the busiest emergency service in Melbourne. Beyond this, I am also involved in registrar teaching; having contributed innumerable presentations to the HIS National Imaging Conference and continue to contribute to international literature through journal articles.”
“HIS has always facilitated my general radiology interest, as well as has recognised my management potential. I am proud to call Northern Health, HIS and Melbourne home”
